Bird's Eye View
- An Overview of the Service |
 |
 |
| |
Example 1
You’ve been working as a manager at an
independent family owned restaurant for last
five years and you realize that the only way to
move up is to move onto another company. You
don’t want anyone at your current job to know
that you’re leaving but you know that you need
references especially since the next job is
going to be a step up. You haven’t spoken to
any old references in the last five years and
you don’t even know how to find them. If you do
find them, you have to now call and ask them to
speak glowingly about you – awkward.
Example 2
You wake up one morning and pick up the daily
paper. In the paper you read that Bob, your old
boss at the advertising agency you worked at
three years ago, was just appointed to Vice
President of Operations for a company you have
always wanted to work for. The paper also says
that they will be expanding the corporate
accounts department by 10% and the salary starts
at more than you make now. It might be a little
bit of a stretch but with your past history with
Bob, you should be able to at least get an
interview and if you get an interview, you know
you’ll probably get the job. You’d always
wanted to keep in touch with Bob but you never
found the time or opportunity to do so. Now you
would really like to speak with him. You find
the number to call Bob at his new job but you
can’t get past the secretary. You leave your
name and number and he does not call back.
Finally you call the secretary and tell her the
Bob was your old boss and you ask if he
remembers you…she pauses and tells you “no”.
Example 3
Your friend Jennifer, a teacher, talks to you
about this Bird’s Eye View service that keeps in
touch with all her references for her. The
service keeps her references updated on what
she’s doing and it also lets her know when one
of her references is moving up or out of her
former school district. You think it’s a waste
of time and money, Jennifer’s not the sharpest
knife in the drawer and so you feel that there’s
no point in taking advice from her. You opinion
is hard work pays off without all those bells
and whistles. One day, Jennifer gets an e-mail
that her reference (a fellow teacher named
Holly) got a promoted to an Assistant Principal
position – Jennifer sends her a congratulations
card with her current contact information and a
description of what Jennifer’s been able to do
as well. A week later, Jennifer gets a call
from Holly saying that her district is looking
for a Department Manager and she would like
Jennifer to interview for the position.
Jennifer is moving to the other district after
the end of this school year. You figure maybe
it’s not such a waste of time and money after
all.
Reference Maintenance
Verifying your job references is only the first
step in maximizing the benefits of being certain
about your references.
According to a study posted on SSRN by Crag
Copeland of EBRI reports some striking
information about the average job tenure of
American workers. Among the findings:
The
median tenure for private-sector workers is 3.9
years.
The
median tenure for public-sector workers is 7.0
years.
The average American will have between 7 and 11 jobs during their
career. When changing jobs, they will
have to reach out to references with whom
they've had no contact for and average of 3 to 7
years.
It is therefore not only
to important to verify job references but also
to maintain these positive references.
Reference Etiquette requires you to develop,
maintain and cultivate reference relationships
in order to keep individuals as positive
references and networking partners. For this
reason, we provide a reference maintenance
